There comes a point for any community where a disaster of a certain size or magnitude leaves more devastation than the community is able to respond to on its own. In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey crashed ashore along the Gulf Coast in Texas and Louisiana. Harvey made landfall as a Category 4 storm, then proceeded to stall out over the southern part of Texas, causing widespread flooding, in addition to the wind and rain damage. The Weather Channel reported that 39.72 inches of rain fell in southeast Texas from Thursday 8/24 thru Monday 8/28/17. CNN reports that 33 counties in Texas were declared Federal Disaster areas. By Thanksgiving, FEMA had inspected more than 570,000 homes that were damaged by Hurricane Harvey.
CCNC-N has been sending volunteers on mission trips to disaster areas since Hurricane Katrina. The Disaster Recovery Team has partnered with Disciples Home Missions again this year. DHM is beginning their recovery work in conjunction with community-based collaboratives. However, recovery efforts remain a long journey ahead for the entire Houston area.
